    Active voice:

     The dog chased the cat.

     Passive voice:

  1. The cat was chased by the dog.
  2. In the active voice sentence, “the dog” is the subject, “chased” is the verb, and “the cat” is the object. The subject “the dog” performs the action of chasing the object “the cat.”
  3. In the passive voice sentence, “the cat” is the subject, “was chased” is the verb, and “by the dog” is the object. The subject “the cat” receives the action of being chased by the object “the dog.”
  4. Here are some general rules for converting sentences from active voice to passive voice:
  5. Identify the subject, verb, and object in the active sentence.
  6. Move the object to the beginning of the sentence and make it the new subject.
  7. Add the helping verb “to be” in the appropriate tense before the past participle form of the main verb.
  8. Include the original subject after the helping verb with the preposition “by.”
  9. However, not all sentences can be converted into the passive voice. For example, some intransitive verbs (verbs that don’t have an object) and some phrasal verbs (verbs that consist of a main verb and a preposition) cannot be used in the passive voice.

English Active & Passive Voice Rules

  1. Active voice is generally considered more direct and clear than passive voice. It emphasizes the subject and the action being performed.
  2. Passive voice is often used when the emphasis is on the object or when the subject is unknown, unimportant, or simply not relevant to the sentence.
  3. To change a sentence from active to passive voice, the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence, and the verb is changed to a passive form. The original subject is then added after the verb as the object of the preposition “by.”
  4. Some verbs, such as linking verbs (e.g. “be,” “seem,” “appear”), cannot be used in the passive voice.
  5. In passive voice, the agent (the person or thing performing the action) is often left out of the sentence. However, it can be included using the preposition “by” after the verb.
  6. Passive voice is often used in scientific writing, where the focus is on the results rather than the person or thing performing the action.
  7. Overuse of passive voice can make writing sound dull and lifeless. Active voice is generally preferred in most forms of writing, as it makes writing more engaging and direct.
  8. It’s important to consider the context and purpose of your writing when deciding whether to use active or passive voice. Both can be appropriate in different situations, and it’s up to the writer to decide which is most appropriate for their specific needs.
